Days of smoking in front bar numbered [Australia] - The smoker's front bar is under threat, with the State Government announcing plans for more limits on smoking. Health Minister Lea Stevens yesterday announced a taskforce to prepare for "strong tobacco-control legislation" but stopped short of using the word "ban". The taskforce has been charged with advising on ways to "protect staff and patrons from exposure to tobacco smoke" in hotels and gaming venues. Away on Business - Green is still gold - Business travelers can take credit for inspiring at least one trend in the lodging industry that has stayed strong despite the bumpy business conditions of the last two years. That's the growing environmental awareness or "green" movement in hotels and motels that has affected everything from how often sheets are washed to the kinds of lighting put in guest rooms. Labor board files complaint against Mission Linen [USA] - The National Labor and Relations Board has issued a complaint against Mission Linen for unfair labor practices...The complaint makes 16 separate charges against the Flagstaff plant, alleging that management at the plant promised wage increases and increased benefits if employees refrained from joining the union. The complaints also allege that management at the plant threatened employees with firing and loss of benefits if they tried to organize. (Arizona Daily Sun, 3 July 2002)

Workers File Disney Hotel Complaint [USA] - A union representing striking workers at two hotels [owned by Tishman Hotel Corp. and managed by Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide Inc] on Walt Disney World property has filed complaints alleging intimidation by the hotels' management, a union leader said Thursday. Docklands boosted by $700m development [Australia/Indonesia] -...new Shangri-La hotel [to be built in Melbourne]...A long-running dispute involving the Kuok group and workers on the Shangri-La hotel in Jakarta yesterday prompted the ACTU president Sharan Burrow to put the company on notice in its dealings with unions on the Docklands project..."We remain concerned about this group's attitude to working people, particularly given their failure to convince their Indonesian partners to respect freedom of association and the right to collectively bargain," she said. Now, boys also trafficked [from Nepal] to India, finds a new study -...Many boys are working in the carpet factories under highly exploitative conditions..."The boys as young as six years of age have to work for at least 11 hours and at maximum 18 hours a day"...Those working in the hotels have to sleep on the tables, if not on the chilly floor..."Most of the trafficked boys don’t get money for the first three years, as the money has to go to the traffickers."
